Michael Otsuka joins CPLB

Dr. Michael Otsuka has joined CPLB as a Core Scholar and is a Professor in the Rutgers–New Brunswick Philosophy Department.

Dr. Otsuka obtained a BA in Political Science from Yale and a B.Phil in Philosophy and D.Phil in Politics from Oxford, the latter under the supervision of G. A. Cohen. Prior to his arrival at Rutgers in September 2022, Dr. Otsuka taught in the Philosophy Departments at UCLA, University College London, and the London School of Economics. He is the author of Libertarianism without Inequality (OUP 2003) and articles in moral and political philosophy in a wide range of journals including Philosophy & Public Affairs and Ethics, mainly on topics in normative ethics and distributive justice. In 2020, he delivered the Oxford Uehiro Lectures in Practical Ethics on How to Pool Risks across Generations: The Case for Collective Pensions, an expanded version of which will be published as a book by Oxford University Press.

His current research interests encompass the value and metaphysics of risks of harm and chances of benefits; reciprocity and cooperation; risk-pooling, pensions, and insurance; the nature of money and debt; prioritarianism, egalitarianism, and the separateness of persons.
